About the Artist and How to Make a Purchase
My name is Jennifer Slater, I am the artist and owner of Hunter's Widow's Hats & Artistic Expressions. My work is inspired by my love of my home in the mountains of Montana, music, decades of travel and exploring the greater outdoors. My husband and I retired in Central Oregon in 2022, he as a high school teacher and coach, and me as a massage therapist and businesses owner. We did a massive purge, transferred a few sentimental pieces to our kids' garages, and moved into a built-out van. We had been boondockers for years, but during this time we learned to slow down and live "out" not "in" while traveling through much of the country. In the spring of 2023, we came back up to Montana, camped on our property just outside of Philipsburg and built our house. As long as I can remember I have been creating in some form and only recently accepting the title "artist" from those who inform me that's what I am. As a result, when my creative juices started bubbling up as the house came to "completion", it wasn't surprising that my response to my husband's insistence we get part-time jobs was, "I just want to make things and sell them." Consequently, he acquired part-time employment and I started nesting and "making things". I had been looking for a hat, something unique and cool, you know, "The Hat", for a long time and eventually figured I should just make one. I had done some wood burning in the past, so I had the tools, I just needed to get some hats and try it out. So I did. The problem, so to speak, was every time I burned a hat, somebody asked if they could buy it. Within a couple months, I still didn't have my own hat, but I was registering my business name with the state of Montana and just like that Hunter's Widow's Hats & Artistic Expressions was born and keeping me busy ever since.
That, my new friend, is, believe it or not, the extremely abbreviated version of my story. In all my travels I have learned there are a lot of places I greatly enjoy visiting, but the mountains are where my heart lives. I find as I mature, I am a storyteller, and I think you'll find my hats are too. I hope you got to this page because you've browsed my portfolio here and in my Facebook album "Hunter's Widow's Hats" or my Instagram (links are found below) and you feel a connection. I am sorry I don't have a shopping cart through my website. Remember, every hat/cap is one-of-a-kind and my inventory is constantly revolving; I simply haven't figured out how to make "the cart" work for my format, particularly since currently I only accept cash or Venmo as payment. I will strive to post newly released hats and upcoming vendor events I will be attending on Instagram and Facebook. Please follow me on these platforms so you can keep up to date on my newest releases and where my next show will be. You are also always welcome to contact me, preferably by phone/text or direct message, but email works too, and we can chat about available merchandise. Or better yet, I would be honored to collaborate with you on a piece of wearable art customized to highlight your story or that of your loved one.
I look forward to working with you! Until then I hope your days are filled with an abundance of fresh air, belly laughs and bear hugs!
Best regards,
~Jenn
